Happy Anniversary to Medicare and Medicaid!

Posted by Jeff Huebner, MD July 30, 2015 at 12:50 PM

Take a moment to celebrate! Today marks the 50th anniversary of the signing into law of Medicare and Medicaid by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The National Physicians Alliance believes health care is a right, and that all Americans deserve access to high quality, affordable health care. The enactment of Medicare and Medicaid were the first steps in a journey toward ensuring better care and better health for all Americans, regardless of their age or ability to pay for care. Did you know that Medicare currently covers approximately 55 million Americans, and Medicaid covers approximately 70 million Americans?

NPA recognizes the history-making contributions these programs have steadily made since 1965. Medicare and Medicaid have given people the freedom to be healthy and to avoid bankruptcy from health care bills. NPA will continue to advocate for these programs to remain strong, and for the next chapter of Medicaid expansion provided for by the Affordable Care Act to occur in the remaining 19 states that have not taken advantage of this opportunity to improve the health of their populations.

Click here to check on your state’s status. If you live in one of these states, please contact your state legislators and ask them to support the expansion of Medicaid so all patients can have access to health care and the freedom that provides.

Every day, I see the impact of Medicare and Medicaid up close and personally, because I take care of patients who depend on these programs. (My parents and other family members now have Medicare, too). Just yesterday, one of my patients—a woman in her seventies—was reassured to know that the treatments I recommended for her knee arthritis would be covered by Medicare and help her get moving again. These programs ensure that Americans have access to a regular physician, can afford their medications, and obtain the care they need to prevent health and financial disasters down the road.
