Last week, NPA convened an inspiring meeting in Washington, DC on the recent election and the way forward. NPA leaders, colleagues from like-minded physician groups, and allies from health justice and public interest organizations came together to share information, strengthen connections, and begin to plan for the next few years. We agreed, only by working together will our patients and communities see the future they need.
The roller coaster of emotion and strategic thinking with our allies and colleagues fed into a weekend-long NPA board and leadership meeting. There we affirmed our commitment as a multi-specialty organization and to building alliances within the house of medicine. We will expand and support our efforts to bring physicians together to foster provocative discussions, help physicians gain new skills, and advocate with integrity in support of our patients and communities.
The ground beneath our feet is still shifting from the election results. However, it’s clear already that our role as physicians is to help heal the deep wounds in our nation. During the election we saw hatred used as a weapon striking fear in patients, communities, and colleagues. Our nation needs healers who value people above profits, ask difficult questions inside and outside the exam room, and know how to work together for long-lasting, meaningful change. The change we seek as physicians is for all of our patients to have access to high quality, affordable health care, and for all communities to foster a culture of health.
This is why NPA is launching a new initiative: #HelpAmericaHeal. Just as we were the first doctors in the health reform coalition of the last decade, and our Good Stewardship project ignited the Choosing Wisely® campaign, NPA plans to blaze a path with #HelpAmericaHeal that brings physician colleagues together, unites them with allies and resources to tell their stories, and turn them into effective actions to foster meaningful change.
