Coming from a country with near universal coverage, and somewhat naïve, I was surprised that when we were offered health insurance upon entering residency, some of my future colleagues opted to not have coverage for medication. The individual mandate to purchase health insurance is one of the most contentious provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
