SUPPORT FOR HAITI
We have all been deeply saddened by the devastation of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, and all of us are finding ways to help. Any support you can offer, large or small, will mean a lot, and here are some resources to guide your efforts:
ONLINE DONATIONS:
The Clinton Foundation has been involved with sustainable development efforts in Haiti prior to the earthquake, and is now coordinating emergency relief but is keeping the long-term picture in focus. To donate, please click here.
Oxfam has also had a long commitment to Haiti, and is directing its efforts towards emergency relief and sustainable development. They are accepting donations here.
UNICEF has coordinated its work with its U.S. Fund, which will pay for all its associated administrative costs, so that your entire donation goes to UNICEF's relief efforts for children in Haiti. You can donate here.
Online donations can be made to Doctors Without Borders (aka Medicins Sans Frontieres) at their Haiti Earthquake Response website.
Another organization accepting online donations is Mercy Ships, a global charity that operates hospital ships in developing nations. This organization is putting together a crew of health care providers and material for immediate relief, and you can help their efforts at the Mercy Ships website.
Care.org is requesting immediate financial support for the food relief efforts they started in Haiti. To donate, you can visit the Care.org website or call 1-800-422-7385.
Delta Airlines will allow you to donate your frequent flyer miles (SkyMiles) to any of their SkyWish charities, many of which need support in transporting personnel to Haiti. The list of charities can be reviewed at the SkyWish Charities website.
TEXT A DONATION:
Text "HAITI" to 90999, and a $10 donation will be made to the Red Cross and Mercy Corps, both of whom are organizing relief efforts. The donation will show up on your phone bill.
You can also text "Yele" to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. Yele Haiti was founded by musician/humanitarian Wyclef Jean in 2005, and is a grassroots movement that builds global awareness for Haiti while helping to transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Yéle's community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief. The donation will be charged to your cell phone bill.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS AND VIGILS:
On January 26, in New York, our very own Dr. Nina Agrawal and the NPA-NY team are co-hosting a fundraiser with NYCforChange, South Asians for Opportunity, Tribeca for Change, Queens for Obama, Asian Americans for Progress, and VoterBook. The event will be at Amity Hall, and further details are available here.
On Friday, January 22, in Los Angeles, CA, the Art Global Health Center at UCLA is raising money for Partners in Health by hosting a day of music, food, and yoga classes. More info is available here.
VOLUNTEERING YOUR SKILLS AND/OR SUPPLIES:
The International Medical Relief Organization has been working closely with Drs. Manisha Sharma and Manel Silva from our NPA team in New York. The IMRO has extensive period in providing disaster medical relief in the US and abroad, having done missions to help those affected by the 2004 tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Ivan, just to name a few. IMRO is very interested in recruiting health care providers, and has a lot of information to share. To learn more, please contact Marylou at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), and be sure to include "National Physicians Alliance volunteer" in the subject line of your e-mail.
Through its Hand of Hope efforts, the Joyce Meyer Ministries are coordinating medical teams for work in Haiti. To learn more, volunteers can click here. Additionally, JMM is gathering donations of medical supplies to send to Haiti, and additional info can be found here.
Partners in Health has requested health professionals who are interested in volunteering to send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with information on your credentials, language capabilities (Haitian Creole or French desired), availability, and contact information. PIH is still in the process of coordinating teams and their on-the-ground efforts. They are accepting online donations.
The Center for International Disaster Information has a registration page where you can describe your skillset or abilities to help.
These are just a few organizations that are doing incredible work to provide immediate relief in Haiti. Again, any support you can offer, large or small, will mean a lot, and we are heartened by your generosity at this difficult time.
