S. 2029 The Physician Payments Sunshine Act
Fully 94% of physicians accept payments or gifts from the pharmaceutical industry.
Public disclosure of the sort mandated by the Sunshine Act will do two very important things:
First, it will put pressure on both physicians and drug makers to reflect on the ethics of their entanglements. And second, it will help lawmakers evaluate the impact of marketing on prescribing practice, revealing trends with major implications for health-care costs and patient safety.
Sponsors of this Act are right to be concerned that industry gifts to physicians encourage brand-name prescribing when generic equivalents exist: this influence leads to tremendous waste of tax-payer dollars in Medicare and Medicaid and similarly contributes to the rising cost of private health insurance. It also leads doctors to prescribe new drugs without long safety records.
