National Physicians Alliance Applauds Appointment of Dr. Donald Berwick as CMS Administrator
Washington DC—July 12, 2010
Citing his experience as a pediatrician and champion of health system improvement, the National Physicians Alliance (NPA) praised President Obama’s appointment of Dr. Donald Berwick as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“Dr. Berwick’s credentials speak volumes, but it is his real-world experience as a pediatrician and leader that makes him such an important selection right now to head CMS,” said Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, President of the NPA.
The NPA strongly supports the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and is working to ensure it is fully implemented.
Dr. Arkoosh continued, “The passage of health reform earlier this year was a hard-fought win, but the bigger fight for its full implementation remains. We need big thinkers like Dr. Berwick, with his proven leadership skills and intimate knowledge of how health care works in America, to ensure that the promise of reform is fulfilled for our families and the physician community.”
The NPA represents more than 20,000 physicians across specialties and across the country. The fiveyear-old organization is working to create a genuinely inclusive, accessible, and patient-centered health care system, believing that for too long, industry interests have outflanked the needs of patients.
