Applications Open: 2014 NPA Copello Health Advocacy Fellowship

We are proud to announce the continuation of the Copello Health Advocacy Fellowship into 2014. Since 2010, the NPA’s Copello Physician Leadership Summit provided a day-long leadership and media training to selected physicians from across the country. In 2013, we expanded our commitment to a year-long professional development with the Copello Health Advocacy Fellowship. We are now recruiting physician advocates, with any experience level, to be part of a movement designed to address the difficult issues required to achieve high value health care including: price, waste and overtreatment, and public good.
Our 2014 Copello program will explore cultural shifts needed to achieve high value health care:

• How can physicians help re-direct poorly spent resources in the health sector into wiser investments to address the health of the wider community?

• What can physicians do to promote fair and transparent pricing in health care?

• What necessary new conversations around stewardship of clinical care should physicians spark in the coming year?

New this year, each Fellow will be teamed up with a physician mentor and a local medical student who has been selected to participate in the American Medical Student Association Advocacy Leadership Course for collaborative learning throughout the year.
Fellows will receive:

• Communications, issue, and advocacy training

• Ongoing connection with past and current NPA leaders and Copello Fellows

• Staff support from NPA for local organizing, advocacy efforts, and media outreach throughout the year

• FREE registration at the NPA 2014 Annual Conference & Summit on Healthcare Transformation (Oct 24 & 25 – NYC Metro area at the Consumer Reports National Research & Testing Center and the historic Hudson River Museum) and a $100 travel stipend

Fellows commit to local actions throughout the year, with logistic support and guidance provided by NPA staff and project directors, including:

• Three Issue Awareness Actions – examples: submission of op-eds, letters to editors, blog posts, or other public comment; meeting with elected officials; media interviews and/or editorial board visits; arranging grand-rounds presentations with invited policy-makers; drafting of testimony; networking meetings with leaders of local allied physician organizations; participation in community town hall discussions, and more.

• Three Local Gatherings – organized with their AMSA partner between October and February, to carry forward discussion of the fellowship’s themes, among colleagues and community members. These meetings can take many forms (think brunch discussion or potluck) and are intended to help build local networks and community.

Fellows are also expected to:

  • Attend the NPA 2014 annual conference (Oct 24-25), registration will be waived and a $100 travel stipend
  • Participate in regularly scheduled skill building, monthly conference calls throughout the year.

Our Copello Fellowship has been highly rated by past participants. We view this Fellowship as a path for professional development and future NPA leadership. If you would like to join our advocacy efforts to achieve higher value in health care in the coming year, please nominate yourself for the 2014 Fellowship. Regardless of your city’s or state’s political climate, we need our policymakers in public and private sectors to pay greater attention to building health care systems that get the best value for everyone involved. Your voice can make an impact on guiding leaders in city halls, statehouses, and boardrooms to recognize the benefits of transparent pricing and resource stewardship.

To apply, please email a brief statement of interest (250 word max) and your CV to by August 31.
