Written by Dr. Jeff Huebner, President of the NPA Board of Directors
On April 6th, NPA joined over 140 medical and public health organizations to send a letter calling on Congress to end the ban on CDC research on gun violence. For over 20 years, rider language in the annual budget has restricted research on this critical public heatlh issue. Time to #End the Ban!
This letter, delivered during National Public Health Week, echoed the March 17 letter from Senator Markey and 16 Senate colleagues calling on Senate appropriators to dedicate funds for the “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence in the United States.”
The president’s FY 2017 budget, already submitted to Congress, includes $10 million of dedicated funding that would “allow the CDC to begin this important initiative.” It’s time for our Senators to step up, end the ban, and fund the kind of public health research that helped reduce motor vechile deaths over the last 20 years and save 360,000 American lives.
What can you do?
Speak out. Adding your voice to our call only takes a few minutes and makes a big difference!
Every day, Congress hears from those who oppose public health research on gun violence–those who fear research will lead to gun confiscation. Congress needs to hear from public health advocates. If you believe research into the causes and prevention of gun violence will help improve the health and well being of your patients and communities, please add your voice to the call to #End the Ban:

I am a physician serving the Senator’s constituents in ___________ area. All too often I see devastating results of gun violence in our community. I’m calling to urge Senator ___________ to support funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence in the United States. I’m asking the Senator to urge his/her colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee to approve the $10 million in the president’s budget for this coming year. This public health research is critical to reducing the deaths and injuries rates, and enhancing the safety in our patients’ homes and communities.
#2 – Share this message with your medical school friends and physician colleagues, and ask them to call their Senators too.
