The recent Executive Order released by the Trump administration and the events of this weekend have been of grave concern to us at the National Physicians Alliance. Though we work more explicitly on issues of health care justice, we believe that all forms of justice are critical to a healthy, vibrant and equitable society. Therefore, we have released the statement below and ask you to sign-on and help amplify our message. Also, please share this statement with your colleagues, your health system leadership, and other organizations to which you belong. Ask them to endorse this statement and speak out.
NPA Statement on Trump Executive Order on Immigration
The National Physicians Alliance stands in opposition to the Executive Order issued by President Trump on Friday, January 27, 2017 stopping all refugee admissions for 90 days, indefinitely prohibiting the admission of refugees from Syria, limiting the admission of those fleeing political persecution, and denying visas to individuals from seven countries in the Middle East.
By targeting certain countries with refugee populations, it directly assaults those who are most in need of our support and protection — the very population that many of our physician members work with on a daily basis. Aware that refugees reaching the US already go through an extensive 20-step, 2-year –long vetting process by multiple agencies, we note there is a complete lack of evidence that any refugees had been convicted in domestic terrorism.
Furthermore, we are deeply concerned with any risks that may be faced under this order by our colleagues – physicians and scientists — who themselves are immigrants from the targeted countries. We stand with them and offer them our full support.
We also recognize the negative impact this order will have on the available professional health workforce in the United States. This negative effect will be amplified in low population areas and rural hospitals and health clinics as they are much more likely staffed by physicians, and especially nurses, who hail from developing countries.
We ask the Trump administration to rescind this order at once, or, failing that outcome, we call upon all stakeholders to raise their voices in protest, from politicians, to other physicians, to advocates and ordinary Americans.
As physicians, we recognize that our professional and moral obligations go beyond caring for individuals, but also include advocating for justice on behalf of the most vulnerable regardless of where they may come from.
