NPA Statement on Confirmation of FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb

Statement attributable to Manan Trivedi, MD, MPP
President, National Physicians Alliance
“The National Physicians Alliance (NPA) is dismayed that Dr. Scott Gottlieb was confirmed earlier today by the U.S. Senate as the next commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Given his lack of experience in public health, his extensive financial entanglements with drug, device and other medical industry corporations and his penchant towards expediting approval of untested drugs and devices at the expense of public safety, NPA continues to have serious concerns about his ability to be a strong steward of the FDA’s mission to assure the safety, efficacy, and security of drugs and devices for the American people. As “Unbranded Doctor[s]”, NPA also believes his deep ties with an industry he will now be charged with regulating remains to be a troubling conflict of interest that will skew his judgement to protect industry profits, not patients.”
“Given these concerns, NPA will redouble efforts to strengthen the FDA approval process so that the public can trust information about treatments they are prescribed.”
